Washington, DC--
It takes a lot to step up to the big leagues of Division I when it comes to a basketball program and tonight Winston Salem State is finding out exactly what it takes to be part of playing with the big dogs. Their big dog, tonight, the Hoyas of Georgetown, who possess a great defensive prowess that smothered the Rams to just 15 percent shooting from the floor in the second half.
For the Hoyas, it was if they didn't even have an opponent in the second half of tonight's game. This was the most lopsided win in Hoyas late history. The last time they took a margin of victory this large, came all the way back during the 1985-86 season, when they also played a few more games at the 2,500 seat Mc Donough Arena.
Jessie Sapp and DaJuan Summers had 14 points a piece pacing the Hoyas and Tyler Crawford added 12 with four three-pointers.
Hoyas Head Coach John Thompson III, applauded the first half effort from the Rams and the abiltiy to challenge their shots. During the second half, Thompson had his team with a bit more offensive prowess that the Rams could not handle.
"At the end of the day, it was a 40-something point win, it feels like it was six to me," Thompson said.
The Hoyas had plenty of chances of letting the Rams come back in the second half, but much of the 30-1 run that went back to the first half negated any chances of the Rams coming back in the second half.
The Rams (1-13) are in the second year of a five-year transitional period from Division II, where they enjoyed success in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, to Division I and entry in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference next year. They have not had a losing season in 11 years, but are already on the brink of reaching that point.
