Man Meets Water, Meets More Water, Meets War Equals Experience to Remember at This Classic Dan Maples Course image

Myrtle Beach, SC--

In a state with over a hundred golf courses to choose from Man o' War is a diamond in the rough.  Only through the eyes and mind of distinguished architect Dan Maples could this course built on a 100 acre lake with back to back island greens and excellent bent grass greens come to life.

The Pointed Magazine staff felt obligated to make our way to Man o' War amid many requests to review its most difficult challenges and picturesque landscape. We must admit that we were unsuccessful in beating the course record, a meager 65 with a par of 72, however, we were quite impressed with the design, course upkeep and cleanliness combined with the overall great attitude and friendliness of the staff.

Each hole at Man O' War offers a different challenge and will test all aspects of your game. The course is brimming with surprises including back-to-back island green, frustrating as they are beautiful. Man o' War, like most Maples designs, appears on its way to becoming one of the classic Myrtle Beach tracks.

Two of the holes that each golfer is sure to enjoy come on the fifth hole and the ninth hole. The ninth green is the most rewarding and challenging hole on the front nine. It is a solid 417 yards from the regular tees and certainly is a hole where a par might be expected. With two golfers, a par and one under for this hole was a great accomplishment as we headed for the 10th tee and another Par 4 374 yard hole.

We found the 15th hole Par 3 to be the most forgiving hole on the course and will be a hole that saves a stroke or two depending on where your game is by the time you hit this hole.

Another great feature is the clubhouse. It is built over a lake and has a deck around the back to enjoy a quick drink after a round. This is just another look that makes this course unique. It's not modern and fancy like some other clubhouses we have featured as part of the review, but the old red rustic look matches the course and will provide that much needed snack at the end.

The course has much to feel proud about working in an environment that produces such happy golfers from any level of play.  Opened in 1996, people are raving including us that you will find a new appreciation for par while battling your way through a course like never seen before.  Be prepared to go to War in Myrtle beach and be sure to call ahead for a tee-time or you may miss the battle.

For more information on the course or to set your tee-time call (843) 236-8000 and ask for Head Golf Pro Bryan Wakefield or Course Director Wayne Welden. You will be glad you did, as this course is one of the few we have to come in our series of golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area.
