If you have ever traveled to Central Virginia or Charlottesville to be more specific, you will know that the area is rich in Virginia history and what more could travelers ask for than a AAA Four Diamond winning property to spend the weekend and enjoy the splendor the area has to offer.
With the picturesque campus of University of Virginia and the Monticello just steps away from the Boars Head Inn and Resort, travelers will find this resort located on a 573 acre estate is a gem that offers more amenities than any properties in Virginia and with the demands that AAA requires for their properties and restaurants, Boars Head Inn will delight you.
When we first arrived at the Boars Head Inn and Resort, we could see why this property has the distinction of highly rated resort, but retains the historic bed and breakfast feeling. The Boars Head Inn looks more like a gated community than a resort. In a town full of chain hotels, it was nice to see a property that keeps travelers relaxing in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains without thinking about the hustle and bustle from the big city they may have traveled.
As we pulled in front of the Boars Head main entrance, the bell staff and their southern hospitality was a terrific beginning to our stay. By the time we were opening our car door the bell staff was offering to help carry our bags and welcome us to the Boars Head.
Inside of the lobby, you will have a chance to see some of the history that surrounds the property, from the paintings on the wall depicting some of the Virginians of yesteryear and really making you feel like you have stepped back in time. You can expect a quick check in and friendly staff at the front desk that seem to be ready to help you with anything you need for your stay.
With 159 guest rooms and 11 suites, there is a room for every type of guest. Whether you are visiting on business or part of one of the many weddings held at the property the rooms also offer a bit of old world flavor. Our best description is New York meets Colonial Williamsburg.
Our room which was in the Hunt Club has a total of 13 rooms that have a stunning lake view that we just could not get enough of on the balcony after the sun set.
Inside of the spacious rooms, guests will find every individual climate control, high speed internet access, refrigerator, coffee maker and if you are lucky to grab one of their highly coveted suites you will have a fireplace and wet bar to enjoy. Sounds like a great idea for a fall get-away... fireplace and glass of Virginia wine with room service from their award winning restaurant... No wonder so many weddings are held here. We did not want to leave after our first night.
Each night guests can expect turndown services. We had the soft robe placed on the edge of the bed making getting ready for a nice night of rest even more enjoyable and relaxing.
Once you settle in your room, we suggest that you make the Old Mill Room part of your dinner plans as the menu is unbeatable and with all of their options, you will want to come back night after night.
The Old Mill Room features new American cuisine and under the direction of Executive Chef Douglas Knopp the restaurant has earned the highly coveted AAA Four-Diamond rating for 19 consecutive years. There are some restaurants that would be lucky to get to 19 months with the way food and service changes from month to month at most restaurants.
Our first appetizer of the evening was a house made Mozzarella with Prosciutto served with Baby Frisee, Roasted Olives and Pesto. This was one of the most unique ways of serving Mozzarella and the Prosciutto was a nice southern touch that also gave the cheese an outstanding flavor.
If you like a little seafood as an appetizer the Meyer Lemon Scented Tuna Tartare which is served with Grilled Pears, Avocado and Plum Coulis. Something sweet to add to a prefect piece of fish.
If you like soup, then The Old Mill Room has everything you to drive your taste buds wild. We recommend the Virginia Peanut Soup and if you like cold soups the Chilled Gazpacho is to die for. Served with Smoked Shrimp and Oven Roasted Vegetables... it is nothing less than filling.
What really makes each appetizer and the main course items so packed with flavor is the Slow Food Movement used at the Old Mill Room.
Carlo Petrini the Founding Father of the movement recognized that the industrialization of food was standardizing taste and leading to the disappearance of hundreds of food verities and flavors. The culinary team at the Old Mill Room supports these principles and preserves the wholesome and artisan foods in every region of the world.
If you think the appetizers are second to none, we highly recommend the Orange and Chili Seared Rare Tuna and the Grilled Pork Chop. These are the best values on the menu and the Coconut Sticky rice served with the tuna was sweet enough to eat for desert.
If you are looking for the best Sunday Brunch within 200 miles of Charlottesville, look no further as the Old Mill offers a full buffet with a selection of two soups, assorted gourmet salads and many entrees to choose from. They also have a full menu at lunch that includes our favorite the Chesapeake Style Crab Cake. Served on a fresh croissant for $13, this might be the best lunch option on the menu.
For those who have come to Boars Head for golf, then the Birdwood Golf Course is your answer. The 18-hole Par 72 6,865 yard championship course is home to the University of Virginia men's and women's golf teams.
In 2005 the course underwent some major upgrades starting with the Birdwood Grille to each one of the bunkers underwent a redesigning process by Pete Dye, which included new high quality white sand. Each of the approach areas around all 18 greens were reshaped, re-mounded and re-sodded with bluegrass. We found six out of the nine holes on the back nine of the course challenging and will make the higher handicappers take a few extra clubs out of the bag just to keep the ball in the fairway.
The most impressive part of the Boars Head is their sports club which boasts 26 tennis courts, including 12 for indoor play. Their fitness area is larger than tow major gyms combined. All of the machines are state of the art which offer a great compliment to the club. With the full swimming area outside for families, this makes the Boars Head a true family destination that has amenities that no other resort in the state will offer.
Topping off the multi-million sports club is the cafe inside that offers full options for lunch and some of the best smoothies found in Charlottesville.
If you came to Charlottesville looking to relax, then try some of the spa services Boars Head has to offer. This modern spa offers spacious and open areas to relax and enjoy hydrotherapy, body wraps, facials or manicure or pedicure. All of the services are priced competitively with some of the other AAA award winning properties and the Boars Head even offers more services that other properties do not have that make this a signature spot in Virginia for anyone who lives in the area or is making this a great weekend vacation.
A full size outdoor pool is just steps from the outside of the spa and each one of the rooms the Boars Head has to offer.
If you are looking for the best place in Virginia to plan your next corporate meeting, look no farther than Boars Head, as they have 13,000 square feet of meeting space and 12 private function rooms. Some of the rooms create a wintertime pleasantry by adding a working fireplace in each room. How's that for the like home feeling?
