By the
time the Hoyas reached halftime of today’s game against UCONN, they realized
that they had dug themselves a big hole one that was going to be difficult to
dig out of, but like many Hoyas teams over the years have done, no lead is safe
and that is exactly what Austin Freeman crew did after the break.
Freeman
and the Hoyas went on a 14-3 run to start the first half and had pulled to
three at 53-50 with 9:44 remaining in the second half controlled their own
destiny after Freeman continued shoot the lights out.
A much better job of execution than the first
half led to open shots and Hoyas Head Coach John Thompson III agreed there was
nothing good about the first half.
"In the first half, our
execution, I thought, was horrible. And that's the only way to put it,"
Thompson said."We were just out there running around," he added.
"Our focus at both ends of the floor was lacking. And they realized it.
And they decided at halftime: 'We're not going to do that."
On the other end of the court the
Huskies offense was just plain horrible according to Head Coach Jim Calhoun.
“We
wasted a "brilliant first half" with
an "awful five minutes" early in the second -- "when we took our
20 minutes of work, threw it away and said, 'OK, now let's play an even game,” said
Calhoun.
What was most
notable for the Hoyas in the end result today, was that they went scoreless for
more than 5:30. They had little more than a free throw for nearly twice
that. Georgetown missed 11 consecutive shots during that drought, and at one
point, its shooting accuracy for the game dipped to 24 percent on
6 for 25 from the field. They finished the
game 41.5 percent from the field. Suprisingly the Huskies shot 47.5 percent and
still found a way to lose.
The Hoyas took
final control of the game when Julian Vaughan tipped in a shot with 44 seconds
remaining giving the Hoyas a 70-69 advantage.
Chris Wright stole
the ball away on the inbound by UCONN and Greg Monroe put the exclamation on
the day with a lay-up with seven seconds remaining.
