One team had to win tonight, and it was both teams that
needed a win like no other. Detroit had not won in 12 games and the Wizards had
a tough loss to New Orleans on Sunday. But it was Detroit and the Charlie Villanueva
show that made things happen tonight. When the Pistons needed the big shots, he
hit them.
He scored 23 points and added
nine rebounds helped Detroit end a 13-game losing streak.
"Somebody had to win tonight
and we just wanted it to be us," said Richard
Hamilton, who scored 19 points for Detroit. "We knew when we came in tonight,
we could only worry about us."
The big thought on the minds of the media and the fans is the
absence of Gilbert Arenas and all of the drama causing more drama inside of the
locker room that is transferring on the court? Who knows, but with only eight
healthy players, the Wizards gave it all at the end of the fourth quarter.
Antawn Jamison led the Wizards with 31 points and 10
rebounds, while Randy Foye, who took over at point guard for Arenas ,
had 20 points and 10 assists. But Washington
shot only 4 for 21 and scored a season-worst 11 points in the second quarter.
The Wizards had the game well under control at 89-84 with
3:09 remaining in the fourth quarter, then Hamilton hit on a jumper and two consecutive
baskets by Rodney Stuckey made the game a little out of reach for the Wizards
at 99-88 with just 46 seconds remaining.
Washington played without Mike Miller again tonight after he
left the game Sunday with an aggravated calf and they also were without Andray
Blatche who was suspended for one game for conduct detrimental to the team.
