For those fans who have ever witnesses the presence of Gerald Albright's live show, many will know this artist delivers a positive message of great music in everyone of his shows.
Our staff at Pointed Magazine wanted to see why his music has driven fans back time after time to see his shows. We found out very quickly when we spoke with Albright about his life and his music.
PM: Good evening thank you for your time.
GA: Your more than welcome.
PM: Where were you born?
GA: In Los Angeles, California in place called Watts. My family and I recently moved to Colorado in February. We love it, the people are nice, there is nice clean air, no smog, it’s really great.
PM: You married your High School sweetheart, how does your wife handle the times when you are on the road.
GA: Well in fact, I married my Junior High School sweetheart. I met my wife Glynis in the ninth grade. Our relationship began as friends, but even in the ninth grade, when we met, I knew she was the one, I just felt it. I knew it was right, even though we both were very young. We have been together for 33 years now between courting and marriage. We had our bumps in the road like any marriage but our long-term friendship held it together. We have great times together.
PM: Do you have children?
GA: Yes, a fifteen year old son, and a twenty-three year old daughter.
PM: How do your children handle your road trips?
GA: I’ve slowed down a lot because of my son being in his teenage years. I want to be a father to him, so I am not on the road as much as I use to be. I want to be there for my son and give him the attention he deserves.
PM: You lost your dad about two years ago. How was your relationship with him and has this had an effect on the way you are raising your son?
GA: I had a wonderful relationship with my Dad. We were extremely close. I miss him tremendously, but I still feel his presence. There are so many things that remind me of him I can just happen to smell a certain cologne that reminds me of him, he is always in my heart. My strong relationship with my Dad helped me to be a better Father to my children and a better man to my wife.
PM: What was your parents reaction when they both realize you wanted to be a musician?
GA: (Laughing) My Mom and Dad were not happy about that. My mom who is eighty-seven years old now, associated musicians with drugs and alcohol. She felt some musicians died at young ages because of this life style, so in no why did she want me to be a musician, she wanted me to be a Doctor or Lawyer or something. I think I fulfilled her dream, because I am a Doctor with my music. Music is therapeutic it heals the soul. I was very fortunate to attend Locke High School in L.A. This school had a great music department and I still remember my music teacher Mr. Dustin. I was also fortunate to have loving parents, actually I would say I have the ultimate parents that allowed me to follow my dream and my love for music.
PM: We know your music audience truly appreciate that you did follow your dream. Is your son musically inclined?
GA: Yes he has played several instruments, but right now I see a tremendous ability in him when he is playing the drums. I believe he can become a great drummer if he decides to stick with it. I will support him in whatever he decides to do.
PM: You were a part of the TV show “America Idol” house band. How was that experience?
GA: That was really great. The talent was awesome. Having a part with the America Idol Band, I really felt the magnitude of the show and the hype and drive of everything going on. I would love to do more of this. It was a lot of fun.
PM: Tell us about your musical friendship with Will Downing.
GA: Wow, Will Downing and I are great friends, we have a musical marriage. When we are working in the studio together we are very comfortable in working together and working out the musical notes. We really flow together, the music works out so beautifully.
PM: What positive message could you give to the young people everywhere?
GA: Work hard, stick to your dream, and don’t let anything or anyone steal your dreams. Be passionate about what you do in life. Be good to your parents, grandparents, aunt, uncles, guardians just anyone who had anything to do with raising you. Always be respectful of yourself and others, and just be happy.
