Washington, DC—
If you ever saw the Cherry Poppin Daddies in their heyday,
say 1997, you had the chance to see why songs such as the “Zoot Suit Riot” put
these guys on the map. Fast forward twelve years and they are back. Not as big
on the charts, but with Steve Perry, (still not the Journey one), still kicking
strong, this band still drops the swing with the best.
In a recent show at Blues Alley in Georgetown where the band
could barely fit all of the band members on the stage, you could see they still
have what it takes deliver their upbeat tunes. With just three original members
of the band in place from their original days when Perry took them to the top,
they have re-emerged on Rock Ridge Records label and have released two albums
that still delivers that up tempo salsa-swing music.
Perry says their music has changed a bit since the Zoot Suit
Riot, but the core values of good swing music still exist.
“We want people to have fun when they come to our shows.
They can get up and dance with me or just enjoy the melody of the band, either
way we are still bringing a fun show for people to enjoy. They can expect a
good bit of the new stuff but they can also expect us to bring all of our old
favorites, which I love to play, said Perry.
During the show you can expect to hear some of their new
stuff that includes
tracks from
their re-issued album of
Susquehanna and the band's second compilation
album,
Skaboy JFK: The Skankin' Hits of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, a
collection of the band's previous ska songs along with several newly recorded
tracks. Both records were released on September 29, 2009.
On October 24, 2009 another chapter in the
success of the band came when the Daddies were inducted into the Oregon Music
Hall of Fame.
For the Daddies the road over the last 10 years has come
with a lot of ups and downs which included a few up’s that led them to this new
tour and the two new albums. The first big break occurred in 2006 when the Zoot
Suit Riot and The Ding-Dong Daddy of the D-Car Line were featured on Dancing
With the Stars. In 2007, Perry announced that the band would be touring again
and in 2008 they were back on the road and started writing new material.
“I had a lot of this material ready, but it took awhile for
anyone to really believe we could do it again. People who know me in the music
business know that I just want to play. Whether we play for 200 or 20,000 our
music is fun stuff and this new album just shows what we are capable of doing,
said Perry. He did however say that he doubts there is a song like Zoot Suit
Riot that will propel them back to the top of the Billboard Charts. “The music
business is different than it was 10 years ago, everyone knows that. We will
see,” said Perry.
Fans will have one more chance to catch the Daddies on New
Years at Hershey Park on Dec 31st. Then they head out on the road
for a tour that takes them to cities such as Paris and Berlin. They return to
the states in April for a show in Princeton, NJ.
