Once again, our staff at Pointed Magazine is dedicated to bringing its readers the hottest products for 2008.The staff at Pointed Magazine have reviewed all types of products in the past but there is a new monster on the course from Nike.

Our staff has played with some of the best clubs Nike has delivered, drivers, rescue clubs, hybrids and even irons, but when we hit the course with the new Sumo Squared 5900 Driver for both men and women the results were astonishing.

The Sumo2 (or Sumo Squared) 5900 has that maximum MOI (Moment of Inertia), which is achieved through the club's square geometry and Nike Golf's "Powerbow" weighting that repositions discretionary weight to the corners of the club head.

The Sumo2 5900 has a deeper face, a convex crown and a redefined body shape, compared to the original Sumo Squared. With its MOI at the max, it provides additional forgiveness compared to the original.

When we first took the 10.5 degree club out of our bag all four of us including our female playing partner were speculating the difference this club was going to make over any of their other clubs they have released to date… and after the first tee shot sailed more than 38 yards farther than with any other driver in the bag… the proof was certainly in the pudding of our bag.

What you will find is that this club works well for mid range handicappers in a higher loft the 10.5 or 11.5 models and for those who want to be just like Tiger and the other tour players using the clubs the 8.5 or 9.5 models will be a weapon not to be matched on the course.

Both models have the Sasquatch/Diamana shaft as stock, and each is available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, 11.5, 13 and 16 degrees.

We really liked the 13 degree model for women. The shaft is perfectly sized for a golfer in the 5’7 or 5’8 range and what we found is that she had an average of 175-180 yards off the tee normally with other clubs including older model Nike drivers. The Sumo 5900 in the 13 degree model increased her yardage by an average of 11.5 yards in one round and the second day 13 yards in a repeat round played at the par 3 Hilltop Golf Course in the Alexandria area and at the Miami Beach Golf Club while covering the Orange Bowl. This could be some of the reasons that the Nike Golf staff is touting these clubs as some of the best they have seen as well.

For those who want a little more in the bag of power, Nike also is releasing SQ SUMO² Fairway Wood on February 2nd and it also incorporates three innovative Nike Golf technologies that help generate straight shots out of any lie. Nike’s signature PowerBow Weighting; Monorail Sole; and a Hot Cryo Steel Face. These three ingredients, combined with a high Moment of Inertia (MOI) and updated body shaping, result in a square-shaped fairway wood that is forgiving, maximizes distance and helps golfers get the ball off the ground.

While we did not test the fairway woods in the field, if they are like their big brother, they are going to make your bag one huge weapon on the course. Watch out golfers, Nike is unleashing the Sasquatch like you have never seen it before.
