Washington, DC--
In their second to last home game before the playoffs, the Wizards were no mood to lose another must win game and Gilbert Arenas like he has done many times this season made sure the Wizards grabbed another victory, this time a big one over a potential playoff opponent in the Cavs, 104-92.
Arenas 35 points and Caron Butler's 21 points in his first night back after a thumb injury made the difference in the game. The one two punch by Arenas and Butler has knocked out several teams this season.
The win tonight kept the Wizards (40-40) in fifth place, a game ahead of the Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls with two games to play. The Wizards can clinch the fifth seed and a first-round meeting with Cleveland if they do their first job, secure wins in their final two games, tomorrow at Verizon Center against Milwaukee and Wednesday at Detroit.
"These guys did a great job tonight. Now we need to focus on the next two games and make sure the hard work does not go for nothing at all, said Wizards Head Coach Eddie Jordan.
"We want to win these last two games," Jordan said. "We want to hold on to fifth. We left here 14 games ago for a long road trip in fifth place. We came back in fifth place despite all the trials and tribulations we've been through so that's the goal. Hang on to fifth. Now let's go win a game against Milwaukee."
The Wizards had a small scare in the fourth quarter when the Cavaliers reserves played better than their starting five did. The Cavaliers pulled LeBron James (17 points), former Wizard Larry Hughes (14 points) and the rest of their starters to open the fourth but the reserves kept things mildly interesting by twice trimming the Washington lead to nine in the final five minutes.
Prior to tonight's game the Wizards were without Etan Thomas and Butler. Thomas missed another game tonight and is questionable for the remainder of the regular season. They could use his services as Michael Ruffin does not serve as the extra scoring the Wizards need off the bench when Brendan Haywood is in foul trouble as he was in the first half tonight.
