Washington, DC--
It was the first chance for the Washington Wizards to showcase the changes they made in the offseason... the grade B-... lots to work on. The best grades of the night came from Gilbert Arenas, 29 points and Jarvis Hayes in his first action since he went down with an injury last season had a stellar second half with 14 points.
Wizards Coach Eddie Jordan was encouraged by more than just seeing a healthy Hayes. He liked the way his starting unit, which featured free agent addition DeShawn Stevenson at shooting guard and saw a much more fluid offense than in previous seasons.
"We had a chance to look at few different things tonight. I liked the way the starters played, but the bench had some problems on the defensive end when the starters were on the bench," said Jordan.
"Our first team played very well defensively," Jordan said. "DeShawn was our captain and got it going defensively and Gilbert was very good, so our two guards started our defense and really got after it. We won the first quarter and at one point had a 14-point lead, so that was solid."
Tonight it was not only the chance to see the new Wizards line-up, but a chance to see Toronto's Number 1 draft pick Andrea Bargnani, who did give coaches some hopes of the future of this franchise with his 3 of 6 from the field and 2 of 2 from three point range.
"I need to improve the same things I did in Italy. It's not a whole new world. It's still basketball," Bargnani said. "If I don't do well on defense, I won't be on the floor."
Fred Jones scored 17 points, and Chris Bosh added 14 for Toronto, which overhauled its roster after a 27-55 season. Jorge Garbajosa's 3-pointer with 38 seconds left broke an 88-88 tie.
For the Wizards tonight's game was just a tune-up for their second game this week when they face the Bulls in Chicago on Wednesday night.
