College Park—
Turnover, Turnover, Turnover, Turnover, Turnover, it almost
seemed like that was all the crowd heard today at Capital One Field at Byrd
Stadium as the Maryland Terps looked the sloppiest they have all year committing
five turnovers and showing no offense when they needed to in the fourth
quarter.
Celebrating their third straight victory, Rutgers (3-1),
took advantage of the five Maryland turnovers, including three interceptions
and a fumble by senior quarterback Chris Turner to run to an easy 34-13
victory.
Maryland had the game well within reach late in the fourth quarter
at 20-13, before touchdown runs by
Scarlet Knights fullback Joe Martinek of 29
and 61 yards in the final five minutes turned a close game into a blowout.
"I am disappointed. I thought our defense played their
hearts out and I really felt we had the chance to win it even though we played
poorly on offense. Our kicking game was average; it just wasn't a very good
effort. I am very disappointed and I'm sure our players and our fans are, said
Terps Head Coach Ralph Friedgen.
Despite doubling Rutgers' yardage (200-95) in the first
half, Maryland led only 13-10 at the break.
For most of the first half, the Terps seemed to control the game, but
like the weather, their offense seemed to get a little worse as the game
progressed.
Turner had one of the worst days he has seen at College Park
throwing for 21 for 38 for 271 yards and most notably 3 interceptions. It was
still better than Rutgers fifth-year senior Dom Natale, who went 4 for 12 for
42 yards. Key point here is did not make any errors and he helped Rutgers keep
their running game in hand.
Rutgers defense stopping the running game was the huge difference
in this game. A total of 28 yards rushing are the lowest the Terps have
experienced under Friedgen.
"We do everything as a team. The kicking game, offense,
defense are family. Certainly the defense played extremely well today. When you
can hold someone to 25 yards rushing that to me is the key to the game. I know people
will talk about the scores and the takeaways, but 25 yards rushing- that's a
very telling stat to me,” said Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano.
