Washington, DC--
If the Hoyas were looking for a good tune-up before heading to Duke this weekend to face the Blue Devils, the did not expect to replace their entire offensive plan before then either.... One problem, the Oregon Ducks showed up at Verizon Center like it was the last chance to gather food before the first big cold blast of the season. Food they gathered, while not a lot of it in a 57-50 victory, but a 6-0 record and knokcing off a ranked opponent is surely something to fly back with a lot of emotion.
Oregon shot only 38.9 percent from the field and 5 of 22 on three-pointers. The Ducks used a small, quick lineup that forced the Hoyas to regather each time they brought the ball up the court.
"We've been slaughtered coming back here to the East, so this is a great game to come back and win," coach Ernie Kent said. "This was a great early-season window of opportunity that we stepped into and took advantage of."
Aaron Brooks scored 15 points, and Bryce Taylor scored 14 points to lead the way for the Ducks.
It appeared that what ever combinations of inside defense schemes that Hoyas Head Coach John had drawn up, Oregon's two guard set found a way to sneak inside and make a contested shot each time inside of the paint.
"Oregon came out with a different kind of game plan, uncharacteristic of what other teams had been playing, said Wallace. Of course guys are going to key in on Roy and Jeff, and what Oregon tried to do tonight is push us out and make us have to make plays off of the dribble instead of being able to sit back and throw the ball in and let those guys take over."
The Hoyas had many chances within the final two minues to turn this game around, but lack of quickness on behalf of the Hoyas only landed the Ducks at the free throw line for the final 50 seconds of the game.
Oregon freshman guard Tajuan Porter, who came into tonight's game averaging 24.0 points, hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half to help give Oregon a 32-31 lead. He finished with 11 points. Taylor's jumper from the left wing with 4:16 to play in the second half started a 10-3 run, and Leunen had a steal and layup that made the score 49-41. This is as close as the Hoyas would come for the remainder of the game.
In the battle of the big men tonight, the Ducks again put a damper on the normally large inside presence the Hoyas have. The match-up of Roy Hibbert at 7'2 versus the 6'9 Marrty Leunen for the Ducks, was easily won by Leunen( 8 rebounds), as Hibbert was forced to the bench for the final minutes of tonight's game.
