Washington, DC--
It might be one thing to be without one of your star players, but when your without two, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler, it is going to be difficult to defeat a team like the Heat that have had your number over the past few seasons and tonight they again had the Wizards number without Dwyane Wade as they knocked off the Wizards 92-83 in front of a sold out Verizon Center.
"We shared the basketball; we played the right way; we competed; we were physical and active," Jordan said. "It just wasn't enough because we couldn't make shots."
Gilbert Arenas continued his four game stuggle as he scored just 15 points on a 3 for 18 effort from the field. It seems that there is some sort of NBA kryptonite holding down Agent Zero and he better find out what it is before the Wizards sink too low in the second half of the season.
Arenas has been suffering over the past few seasons, but knows the franchise lies on his shoulders and takes the court every game in keeps his team in the thick of things. If both Jamison and Butler return over the next couple of games it should be interesting to see if Wizards Head Coach Eddie Jordan opts to sit Arenas for a game or two to get his shooting rhythm back.
In the absence of Wade back-up guard Jason Williams just had his way from long range with the Wizards hitting on 5 for 10 from long range finishing with 23 points.
The other story of the night comes from the dominance of Shaquille O'Neal inside the paint. He went 11 for 17 in field goals scoring 23 points, many of which came after halftime.
During a third quarter stretch, O'Neal scored 12 straight Miami points and he helped the Heat to a 34-20 advantage in points in the paint, but his biggest basket came with 3 minutes 7 seconds remaining when he posted up against Brendan Haywood, beat Haywood to the baseline with a spin move and laid the ball in, giving Miami a 79-72 lead.
Neither of the Wizards Center could guard Shaq and his dominance showed inside that included two thunderous rim shaking dunks, one off an ali-oop from Antoine Walker.
"If somebody thinks he's too old or too whatever, at the end of the day the man's still over 300 pounds," Haywood said. "When somebody weighs that much more than you, there's nothing you can really do if there's no double-team coming. It's like playing against your big brother. You can try as hard as you want to, but he's older and bigger than you and there's nothing you can do."
Wizards Notes:
The Wizards signed F Mike Hall to a 10-day contract and released C James Lang. Hall comes back to the Wizards after playing the NBDL. Lang had only appeared in 11 games for the Wizards this season.
