Washington, DC--
It seems like the Washington Wizards have made a name for themselves when it comes to nail biting games this season and other teams just have not liked to see the final results when it gets within 1 or 2 points with just seconds remaining.
Tonight it was the same result when the Atlanta Hawks came to town. The Wizards held a lead with minutes left in the fourth quarter and then the Hawks went on a mini-run 11-1 taking the 92-91 lead with less than 45.2 seconds remaining in the game.
Just seconds remaining a battle for a loose ball was awarded to the Hawks when DeShawn Stevenson fell out of bounds setting up the final chance for the Hawks to with the game .
With 2.0 seconds remaining on the clock the Hawks inbounded and looked to free up Joe Johnson, but when Johnson was not open a pass to the top of the three point line Tyronn Lue gave them the final shot, but the shot was tipped and the Wizards escaped with a 93-92 victory.
Tonight not only marked the return of Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler, but the victory stopped the four game losing skid they had started that could have very easily became five tonight when the Wizards lost the lead in the fourth quarter.
Jamison after the game said he was happy with his performance in his first game back after missing 12 games with a knee injury.
"I thought I was going to be a little bit more winded, but the last week or so, I've been doing a lot of things to keep my wind up," said Jamison, who shot 10-for-20 from the field in 39 minutes.
As for the Hawks their season has had a few ups and downs and Head Coach Mike Woodson gave Jamison credit for helping the Wizards to their win tonight.
"We made play after play, but you have to look at the free-throw block out," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "Jamison was able to keep the ball alive, and that was huge."
Josh Smith had 24 points for the Hawks and Marvin Williams added 21, who now have lost four in a row and five straight road games. Smith also had a season-high 14 rebounds and tied his season high with seven blocks.
Wizards Notes:
Wizards forward Micheal Ruffin missed his second straight game because of dizziness and severe headaches. He is undergoing a series of tests but the results won't be available until sometime next week, coach Eddie Jordan said.
