Washington, DC--

Looking around the room at the number of reporters that attended the press conference for the Tiger Woods golf tournament taking place in Washington on July 5-8, you could tell that Tiger finally had made it to the Washington area to play in a PGA Tour event, his own.

"It's a pretty historic day for us," Woods said. "I remember when I first came on tour, my goal one day with my father was to host an event on the PGA Tour. I just wish he could be here to see it."

Today at the press conference it was announced that AT&T to become title sponsor of its fifth tournament. The company already sponsors PGA Tour events at Pebble Beach and in Atlanta, along with two tournaments on the Champions Tour. Finchem said the deal would be for at least five years, with an option to sponsor the event through 2012.

Greg McLaughlin, president and CEO of the Tiger Woods Foundation, said the Washington event won't have any immediate affect on the silly-season event held at Sherwood Country Club.

"We're very committed to maintaining the challenge season event we have in December in Southern California," he said. "And we're really excited about our partnership with the tour and the Washington market."

Woods also hinted at the fact that this would make his foundation search much easier to find a location somewhere on the East Coast. A great start would be right here in Washington, where Inner City youth could benefit from a foundation like Woods'

Woods' foundation is geared toward children and his biggest project to date has been the $25 million Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim, Calif., which opened in February 2006. Woods said 5,000 kids have come through the center, learning everything from rocket science to forensics.

The last biggest challenge is finding a course for the tournament. Congressiona Country Club which s ems to be the front runner will have a vote of the board to decide if they could play the tournament this July at this prestigious course located in Potomac, Maryland. Congressional is to host the 2009 U.S. Amatuer and the 2012 U.S. Open.

Other options in the Washington area include Robert Trent Jones course at Lake Manassas, which hosted the Presidents Cup in 2000. Avenel, a TPC facility, is already under renovations for the next three years will not be able to host the tournament, but moving it after the course renovations have been completed is possibly an option according to FInchem.

Woods also said that since the tournament was being held in the Nations Captia, he would like for all members of the military to attend for free and also children under 12 would be admitted for free and have plenty of activities to involve them while at the tournmament.

So lastly... there is always the possibility that Woods might not be able to play in the tourney, as his wife is scheduled to possibly have her baby during that time.... Ironic that the tourney is in D.C and he might miss it? No, just that Woods is also just as happy about this day as he is ready to be happy for the birth of his child.
