New York, NY--
Looking back at the 2006-07 season and seeing what the Hoyas have done to make this season so successful starts with one player, Jeff Green, who tonight again helped lift the Hoyas to another key victory, one that lands them in the Big East Finals tomorrow night against the winner of the Pitt vs Louisville game.
The Hoyas we led by a stellar performance by Jeff Green who scored a career high 30 points and gathered 12 rebounds and even scored the winning bucket with 12 seconds remaining in the game.
Green who has been the leader of this team all season long has been complimented by Roy Hibbert coming into his own and according to Hoyas head Coach John Thompson III, he was one of the players that was not happy losing to Syracuse last season and did not want to lose tonight.
"Much like the rest of our guys, he didn't want to lose, and the performance he put on today was special," Georgetown Coach John Thompson III said of Green, who played the full 40 minutes. "At the end of the day, great players make plays, and Jeff did that."
"The performance Jeff put on today was special, and just our team in general hanging in there," Thompson said. "We could have caved on several occasions from the beginning of the game midway through the second half, and we fought, we hung in together.
Notre Dame was led by Russell Carter's 21 points, including five 3 pointers. Freshman guard Tory Jackson added 20 for fourth-seeded Notre Dame (24-7), which ended a six-game winning streak. Georgetown, which beat the Irish for the fourth straight time, also eliminated Notre Dame last year with a 67-63 win in the quarterfinals.
The other story of the night was the coming out for Patrick Ewing Jr, who went 7 for 11 from the field with 15 points in what was his best game as a Hoya since transferring to the Hilltop from Indiana.
"He was effective out there I thought at both ends of the floor," Thompson III said. "We were playing well when he was in there, so we kept him in there."
