New York, NY--
At the end of tonight's Big East Tournament Final it would be an understatement if anyone said the Hoyas did not dominate not only tonight but during the entire tournament. While they escaped with a two point margin of victory over Notre Dame last night, they simply dominated the Pitt Panthers in a 65-42 victory.
The point total by Pitt (42) was the lowest in Big East Tournament history breaking the old record of 54 points and according to Hoyas Head Coach John Thompson III, the victory was attributed to a lot of defensive pressure.
"We made it difficult to get shots," Thompson III said. "We were fortunate. They missed a lot of shots they normally make."
For Pittsburgh, they looked like a much different team then the previous two nights, notably tonight was the offensive absence of Aaron Gray, who was just 1 of 13 from the field.
The Hoyas were led by another stellar performance by forward Jeff Green who after scoring a career high of 30 points last night against the Fighting Irish added 21 points tonight. He was helped his big man in the middle, Roy Hibbert, who scored 18 points and at times just dominated inside the paint.
Georgetown led 32-17 at the half and shot an amazing 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field, compared to Pittsburgh's miserable 24.1 percent (7-of-29). Gray scored just one first-half point, was 0-for-9 from the field and missed several easy shots. Antonio Graves, who scored a career-high 23 points in the win against Louisville, was held without a point in the opening half and finished with six.
Jeff Green won the Dave Gavitt Award, given to the tournament's most outstanding player. Green joins Alonzo Mourning, Reggie Williams and Patrick Ewing as Hoyas who won both the conference regular season and tournament outstanding player awards.
