They always say great teams are not built overnight, tonight the Hoyas provided that the building they have done behind Head Coach John Thompson III have been all for the right reasons as they celebrated their first trip to the Final Four since 1985 defeating North Carolina, 96-84 in overtime of the NCAA East Regional Finals.

Georgetown overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half, then ripped off 14 straight points in overtime to stun the top-seeded Tar Heels 96-84 in the East Regional final Sunday for their first trip to the Final Four since 1985, when the coach was John Thompson Jr. and the star was Patrick Ewing.

Jeff Green led Georgetown with 22 points and freshman DaJuan Summers added 20.

For the Hoyas they did the unthinkable by coming back from a 69-58 deficit with 12:22 remaining in the game. The Tar Heels the who won the 2005 National Champion had the momentum swing late in the game by the Hoyas wore their offense down in the final and after a dunk by the Hoyas Jeff Green with 11:38 remaining the Hoyas pulled within six points at 69-63 and it seemed that the Hoyas had taken the game back into their own hands.

After a missed three pointer by the Tar Heels Ty Lawson 4:38 remaining the Hoyas Roy Hibbert countered with another dunk with 4:22 remaining pulling the Hoyas to within three at 75-72.

North Carolina had one more chance to make things happen in regulation when they put the ball in the hands of freshman Wayne Ellington missed an open jumper from the wing right before the buzzer. Patrick Ewing Jr grabbed the rebound and looked up in the crowd to his father who ecstatically high fived all of the Hoyas faithful around him.

In the overtime period the Tar Heels just could not find a way to make a basket. The shot 1 for 13 from the field and guard Ty Lawson was the only Tar Heel to score in overtime when he hit a three pointer with 0:08 remaining in the game.

For Georgetown the victory over North Carolina is pay back for the loss in 1982 when the Tar Heels defeated them at the Superdome in New Orleans. Most players on the team did not seem to care about the previous match-up, but the Hoyas did as it felt good to earn that trip back to play for a National Championship.

The Hoyas will play Ohio State (34-3) in the national semifinals next Saturday at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. UCLA takes on defending champion Florida in the other game.
