Washington, DC--
What will it take for the Wizards to get just one victory? Will it take more than Antawn Jamison scoring 48 points? Or will it come down to just one game tomorrow night against the Pacers that sets the playoff road for the Wizards. Just when they thought their 6th place standing was safe... just ask the Magic, who tonight moved another place up the playoff ladder and made the math equation for who is playing where that much more difficult to figure out.
A Washington loss to the Pacers tomorrow night in th regular season finale combined with an Orlando win over Miami would drop the Wizards from sixth to eighth, setting up a meeting with Detroit. Then you have the team they are now tied with, New Jersey, who has the tie breaker and with win over Chicago would drop the Wizards to seventh, setting up a first-round series with either Chicago or Cleveland. Confused yet? We are and so are the player for trying so hard but falling so short at the end of the night.
You certianly can not say the Wizards did not come to play tonight, but you can say that despite Antwan Jamison's 48 points, three short of his 51 point career high, the rest of the Wizards team besides Jarvis Hayes and his6 for 12 from the field with 15 points the rest of the Wizards team was kind of missing... Did they even leave the locker room?
The Wizards backcourt of Antonio Daniels and DeShawn Stevenson shot a dismal 2 of 24 shots and totaled 11 points. The bench was outscored 28-10 and the Wizards managed only 16 points in the third and fourth quarters.
After Hedo Turkoglu made a long jumper for the Magic, Darius Songaila and Jamison each missed short shots for the Wizards and Keyon Dooling gave the Magic a 95-89 lead by making two free throws with nine seconds left.
"We don't have a lot of room for error," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "When we get to the line and miss that many, it is like rolling uphill or going upstream with one oar."
Tonight the Wizards also had a few numbers that returned they would rather not see but without Arenas and Butler, the Wizards had to face the fact that they hadn't lost six straight at home in a season since 2000-01, when they finished with a franchise-worst 19-63 record. ... The teams split the season series 2-2, but the Magic have the tiebreaker based on a better divisional record. ... The Wizards (40-41) fell below .500 for the first time since they were 10-11 on Dec. 15.
"We just have to finish strong tomorrow night. Indiana has nothing to lose and every reason to make us lose a spot. When you know your going home after your game tomorrow night, there is alot a team will do for its fans and to end on a high note, we just need to make sure that we end our season with the high note and not the Pacers," said Jordan.
