When fans come to Richmond International Speedway they are usually treated to a interesting and exciting race and even a spectacular finish or two, but tonight it was the exact opposite as Dario Franchitti won his third connsecutive race where he led 242 laps of the 250-lap race at Richmond International Raceway, setting a track and IRL record.
"We took off at the start and pulled a lead pretty quickly and I was pleasantly surprised by that," Franchitti said, explaining that he used a different setup on his car than his Andretti Green teammates. "The car just kept getting better. We were able to cut through lap traffic and pull a gap and maintain the gap on the guys behind."
"I got by some people and some others were more difficult," Franchitti said. "I wasn't going to take any chances because we had such a lead. I just didn't want to take those big risks and put my nose in somewhere and have it taken off."
Dreyer & Reinbold Racing's Buddy Rice advanced seven positions to finish fifth (his second consecutive top five). Patrick finished sixth, followed by Vision Racing's Tomas Scheckter and Rahal Letterman Racing's Scott Sharp (fifth consecutive top 10).
The fourth caution flag of the night on Lap 238 when the Nos. 55 car driven by Kosuke Matsuura and the No. 6 car driven by Sam Hornish Jr. bumped in traffic appeared to set up a shootout for the end and might have possibly changed the outcome of the evening. But Franchitti got a big jump on the Lap 244 restart and Scott Dixon couldn't make up ground.
