Washington, DC--
While yesterday had some upsets on the hard courts of the Fitzgerald Tennis Center, today a few more of the top seeds took the early exit including Mardy Fish was knocked out in the second round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Wednesday, 7-6 (4), 6-4 by Michael Berrer.
Fish who said his knees might have played a part in his lackluster performance tonight, but said he was not ready to call it quits before two of the next major tournaments.
"It's pretty painful," Fish said. "It's just one of those things that needs like a month off. I'm willing to try. I'm willing to put in the work," he said. "It's just one of those things that probably needs a little more than six days."
American John Isner, who pulled another upset by beating No. 8 Benjamin Becker 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6). On Tuesday, Isner advanced when Tim Henman double-faulted on match point, also in a third-set tiebreak.
Local favorite Paul Goldstein was defeated by Radek Stepanak, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The unfortunate thing about Stepanak's victory tonight is that he will have to face Number 1 seeded Andy Roddick tomorrow.
Goldstein said that Stepanak played really tough and it was close match that could have gone either way.
"It was quite close," said Goldstein. "I played well, but Radek is playing great tennis right now. He's clearly playing with a lot of confidence. But at the end of the day, it's still a loss. A close one, at that."
While some players struggled on the court today, the biggest struggle was the hear. Tomorrow will feature more of the same weather conditions as it did today with the temperatures expected to be in the high 90's, much of what kept many of the players including Goldstein changing shirts mid set through his match.
