Every one of the 11,364 fans at Verizon Center today wanted to see what the Hoyas could bring for 2007-08 and they got a good look at what the Hoyas could do today as they knocked off William and Mary, 68-53.
Today the season started with another strong outing from Senior Roy Hibbert who with his Pre Season All American status is expected to lead this team right back where they came from last year, Final Four.
"I felt proud of what we did last year, but Coach always emphasizes that last year is last year," said Hibbert, who had 23 points, three shy of his career high. "We have to move on and make improvements. We're a totally different team than we were last year, obviously, so we're working everything out now."
Georgetown led, 35-30, at halftime. After relying too heavily on three-pointers in the first half (17 of their 26 shots were from beyond the arc), the Hoyas made a point of getting the ball inside to the 7-2 Hibbert, who attempted only three shots in the first 20 minutes.
"Once [Hibbert] gets it inside, you can't stop him, basically," William & Mary Coach Tony Shaver said. "He's not a guy, in the past, that's the primary option, that wanted to throw you on your shoulders and lead you home. I think he's probably going to have to do that more with this team."
The Hoyas had some scares late in the second half when they led by five points, 47-42, with less than 10 minutes left in the game when William & Mary guard David Schneider hit a three-pointer to narrow the gap to two points. Georgetown responded with Hibbert, who hit three-straight baskets and keyed an 11-3 run as the Hoyas extended their lead to double digits for the first time, 58-48, with 4:25 to play in the game. A lay-up from junior guard Jessie Sapp and a three-pointer from senior guard Jonathan Wallace capped the run for the Hoyas.
