Tampa, FL --
Starting the Semi-Finals of the Esurance Tampa Open was a difficult chore Saturday morning as man named Barry reeked havoc on the Tampa Metro area this morning.
Dumping as much as 6 to 7 inches of rain in some areas and making a few of the courts unplayable for a few hours, it did not seem to stop the legendary Karch Kiraly on the mens side and the ferocious team of Misty May- Treanor and Kerry Walsh from advancing ot the Sunday finals.
"There were two courts that were holding a lot of water. I can only assume that there is a trench underneath the court that was holding water and didn't drain very well," competition director Matt Gage said. "So we dug big trenches and pushed the water out. When we thought they were manageable, we brought some good sand in and covered them and started play again."
Most of the Saturday crowds were kept away by the storms, with a mostly sunny day forcasted for tomorrow the stands should be packed to see the finals.
On the men's side, No. 5 Karch Kiraly and Kevin Wong defeated No. 8 Brad Keenan and John Hyden, 21-19, 21-19. The win ensures at least a third-place finish for Kiraly, his best since 2005. At worst, Wong will finish third for the second straight weekend after reaching the semis with Dax Holdren in Louisville last week.
"It's been a tough day with the sand and all of the rain this morning, but I am happy to be advancing. The fans seem to love it so, I am going to give it a good show tomorrow and hopefully they will be as happy as they were this afternoon," said Kiraly.
On the women's side, No. 1 Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh advance to the semifinals by defeating No. 4Diane DeNecochea and Barbra Fontana, 21-14, 21-19.
"They played us tough in the second game, but it was out experience that carried us through. The wind made it tough for everyone out there today. Hopefully the conditions will much better for the finals tomorrow afternoon," said Kerry Walsh.
Sunday’s action begins at 9:30 a.m., with the men’s finals scheduled for 2:30 p.m., followed by the women’s at 4 p.m. Both finals will be televised on FOX Sports Net
