Washington, DC--
In a game that came down to one final possession, it looked as if the Villanova Wildcats would pull off either a second half upset with the final possession of the night or the Hoyas would force overtime at best, no one would have predicted the finish that fans saw tonight at Verizon Center.
With just seconds left on the clock, Jonathan Wallace recovered the rebound and headed down the left side of the court to possibly attempt a long three pointer, then came what was an apparent bump by Villanova's Corey Stokes... apparent being the word of the night. The Villanova bench was stunned by the call and so was Wallace.
"At first I thought I stepped out of bounds," Wallace said, "because I was trying to make a play with the time running down. But I did kind of [feel a] nudge when I was trying to turn the corner."
"Wallace was dribbling, and the ref called a foul," said Stokes, who became the game's fourth player to foul out on the play. "What are you going to do?"
Georgetown won tonight despite blowing a 12-point second-half lead and scoring only two field goals over the final eight minutes.
Scottie Reynolds led the way for the Wildcats with 24 points who fell to 4-7 in conference play and have lost six of seven.
Reynolds game his Cats the best chance to stay alive tonight with a running lay up in traffic with 1:05 to play. After Georgetown's Austin Freeman missed a 3-pointer, the Wildcats set up a final shot and who better to give it to then the hot man of the night, Reynolds.
Reynolds took the ball up the court and used as much time to work a play and get the best shot. Driving to the bucket, Reynolds came up short while Villanova looked to have possession, the ball squeaked out to Wallace on the side and that is when he drove up court only to be bumped on the side.
Villanova created the dramatic ending by shooting a horrendous 13 percent in the second half -- including 0-for-13 from 3-point range -- and 25 percent for the game. Corey Fisher went 1-for-16 for the game, and Reynolds was 1-for-6 after halftime.
After the game Hoyas Head Coach John Thompson III responded to the call in his favor.
"I'm glad it went our way," said Thompson. It is a great way for the guys to bounce back after the tough loss on Saturday night.
The Hoyas will have another tough conference match-up as the travel to Syracuse to face the Orange on Saturday February 16th.
The Hoyas Jonathan Wallace Is Fouled With 0.1 Remaining Giving the Hoyas a 55-53 Victory
