Niagara Falls Ontario, Canada--
In our latest installment in the search to find the best places to eat for our readers, we ventured north of the border and found a place that delivers a great view, top notch service and delectable entrée options. The Keg, if you haven’t heard by now is the hottest place to eat while in Niagara Falls and our experience showed why patrons continue to recommend this restaurant to all of their friends and family.
The Keg is true to its name when it comes to friendliness. Upon arriving at the restaurant, our staff was promptly greeted by two of the friendliest managers in the business, Christina and Courtney. They were both extremely professional, knowledgeable and a lot of fun.
Unlike some staff we have encountered in the restaurant industry, Christina and Courtney make a winning combination that is hard to find. They do so as friends and have known each other since they were fourteen years old. Our staff found this pretty amazing, and they have both have worked at some of the same restaurants throughout those years.
Upon entering the Keg, patrons will be greeted at the front door with a smile from the hostesses. The décor inside admired is a warm brown color with hints of gray and green and the beautiful water sculpture with softy running water will help you relax and prepare for the pleasant dining experience.
The lighting in the restaurant was subdued with a romantic hint.
Entering farther inside the Keg, all will be simply amazed with it’s beautiful view of both sides of the Falls. When we arrived for dinner it was around 9:40 pm and Niagara Falls on the United States side was lit in color. The falls are always worthy of many photos, but tonight it was just breathtaking. We arrived at the restaurant in time to see the fireworks over the Falls, which made all the entire guests in the restaurant ooh and ahh it was quite spectacular.
The Keg offers table of various sizes from dinner for two, or dinner for eight or more. It offered a huge brick wall with a fireplace encased. The wine cellar also was well placed inside the wall with a beautiful glass front. The dining area offered tri-level seating; wherever you sat in the restaurant you have a view of the Niagara Falls. The wait staff all looked very professional, clean white aprons, hair in place, cleaned shaved faces on the male staff, nails clean, crisp white shirts, each had a warm smile on their faces. The wait staff checked back with us from time to time to make sure things was going well. It’s quite a friendly place.
After admiring the restaurant, it was time to see what everyone was talking about, the food.
Our drinks and appetizers were served promptly, but the entrée’s took quite some time. The restaurant had a nice sized crowd, but not extremely crowded so we were not sure why the wait was as long as it was. Due to the wait staff’s friendly mannerism time went by smoothly.
Our drink selection from their vast menu consisted of an Apple Martini, which was served to perfection with a nicely sliced apple floating on top. The next drink was recommended by the Keg’s staff, a Miami Haze as they called it. It looked like a sunset and went down smooth to the last drop.
The first appetizer that we sampled was the Crab, Parmesan and Spinach Dip. This item is highly recommended as it is complete with large chunks of crab meat, spinach, and aged Parmesan cheese and stacked high with pita and tortilla chips. This is a meal on its own for some who come to the Keg.
The dip was quit thick not as creamy as some restaurants make it. This made it more enjoyable for those who enjoy tasting each bite of the ingredients. I was able to taste the delectable ingredients in every bite. The pita chips were very flavorful the tortilla chips were nicely sized and whole. The various colors made for a pretty dish.
Warm bread was served in a blanket. The butter was at room temperature very easy to spread. Utensils were neatly wrapped in a napkin and had no visible water spots. Great presentation and a clean atmosphere on the table make for a great start to the evening.
For the dinner entrée’s we decided to sample the Sirloin Oscar, a 10oz sirloin topped with shrimp, scallops, asparagus and béarnaise sauce. The results were again very positive. Great presentation and great taste, but I ordered my sirloin well done. Upon cutting into the steak it was medium well. This was easily solved as the service at the Keg is attentive to your needs and then some.
We also tried The Peppercorn Steak, which is a New York strip loin steak. It was prepared medium well, as ordered and it was very tasty and very spicy. The Keg personally makes their own peppercorn sauce for this dish.
For the sides to compliment the steaks, we recommend the Steamed Half Tomatoes Topped with Cheese. The tomato was very large beefsteak style and wonderful, it melted in my mouth.
Another side that is highly recommended is their Mashed Potatoes. Accented with a hint of bacon, the potatoes were extremely thick with plenty of bacon. Unfortunately the potatoes were served lukewarm and for my taste they were a little too thick and dry.
Steamed Asparagus topped with melted butter is another great option to compliment the steak. This dish was large enough to serve two. The steamed asparagus were very tasty and snapped as you bit into them. Served whole, the stems were quite long and lovely. I would order this dish again.
For dessert, no one can miss the Cheesecake topped with Raspberry sauce. The cheesecake was thickly sliced which was great. It was very creamy and decadent. The sauce was perfect not overwhelming. The cheesecake was presented quit nicely. I say this dish was excellent. After one bite you will want the whole cake.
One other dessert not to be missed is the Bill Miner Pie. Very filling and bursting with flavor. This pie is generally served for birthdays or special occasions.
Overall, Pointed Magazine’s staff was very pleased with The Keg Fallsview service, its great food, warm atmosphere and a fantastic view of Niagara Falls. On your next visit to the Falls, stop by and check out what the Keg has to offer for dinner, the dining experience will reward you.
