Toronto Ontario, Canada--
“Crush” a befitting name for one of the best Bistro style Wine Bar of it’s kind!
Entering “Crush” gave our staff the distinct feeling of being in the East Village in New York City. We realized we were in Toronto, Ontario on King Street West. Mr. Jamieson Kerr, owner of Crush warmly greeting us.
This stunning restaurant is housed in a bricked styled brownstone. Above the entrance way, hundreds of corks were artfully perched on a shelf. Through out the restaurant, posters were hanged depicting various themes associated with wine, a very nice touch. Bistros styled lighting were softly lit surrounding the guest in a pleasant haze. The beautiful wooded floors and tan bricked walls were pleasing to the eye. Huge windows overlook Crush's open patio below, a visual masterpiece in itself. The open kitchen was alive with chefs busy tending to the creation of delectable dishes for your dining pleasure.
The wait staff was dressed in blush colored tailored shirts, with black aprons. Even their shirts reminded you of a blush wine. Fresh flowers were found adorning the tables along with with a clean crisp white linen.
The main courses consisted of Flat Iron Steak and Chicken Supreme. The Flat Iron Steak was served with Pommes Frites and Herb Butter The Chicken Supreme was served with Israeli Couscous and Tarragon Jus. The Flat Iron Steak is a Crush favorite and we soon realized why. The steak was artfully placed on the dish in a circular pattern. The presentation was simply beautiful. The steak was ordered medium well. This steak was very tender. Every bite of this steak was delightful. The Pommes Frites were bursting with flavor more flavorful than regular French fries. The wine for this dish was a 1999 California Zinfandel the grapes were pleasing to the taste pallet and were very robust, this wine fully complemented the dish.
The Chicken Supreme was prepared on a bed of Couscous with a touch of asparagus; this dish was also presented well and was quite tasty. The wine served was Plan Pegau, a French wine that complimented the dish and was served in a beautiful crystal Crush wine glass.
Dessert was impeccable. Chocolate Espresso Cake laid on a coffee sauce served with coffee ice cream. What a treat! This is a definite coffee lovers dessert. It is just the right combination of chocolate and coffee all wrapped into one.
The next dessert that we sampled was Vanilla guanche; it melted in your mouth. This is one of the best deserts they have on the menu and will compliment any glass of wine they have to offer. This is one desert you will ask for the recipe, as it was so good we wanted some to take home with us.
Both desserts’ were served with a 2002 Riesling Ice Wine that truly made the desserts come to life. Crush, offers a tremendous array of fine wines from the world over for your tasting pleasure. Come feel the atmosphere of this fabulous wine bar. You’ll be crushed if you don’t!
